Sooo remember a while back when I was super gung-ho about the whole 30 diet?

I was all hyped and ready! All Ready to be summertime fine and stuff. I thought that it was going to be my sure fire way to drop these pounds, despite the restrictions… but oh how wrong I was. I was consistent for maybe 3 weeks, MAYBE a month?

WHAT. A. FAIL.

To be completely honest with ya’ll, I kept cheating, lol. We had work events coming up where I was able to eat for FREE… and who is about to pass up a free meal??

Then not long after that, I was dealing with constant pain, relapses, and the hospitalization situation, so I did away with it, I didn’t want to be bothered. In the beginning, I felt like such a failure though. Thinkin’ like “Dang Jordan, your self-control is SO TRASH, you can’t eat better food for ONE SECOND for your health? Just super discouraged. So while I’m looking up doctors for weight loss surgery, my sister and angel Danielle is in my ear was like, try keto, try keto, I’m losing weight, try keto, it helps with inflammation too, Jordan, TRY KETO. Initially, I was like NO. I was adamant about completing the whole 30, but the whole 30 wasn’t WORKING for me. It got to the point any time I wanted to cheat, I did, and I didn’t care. I came to the realization that I had to find something that worked for me and not completing the whole 30 wouldn’t be the end of the world, which brings me to the KETO Diet/ Lifestyle.

So for starters just let me say whole 30 DID help with a lot of areas I struggled with. Portion control and binge eating being the main one, but it also helped with becoming creative in the kitchen, recognizing the different crap they put in our food and just eating FRESHER foods in general. I don’t know the last time I purchased anything in a box or canned, except for green beans. So with that being said Whole 30 definitely jump-started this journey and while I haven’t lost a significant amount I haven’t GAINED either. So I’m moving in the right direction.

NOW, when I say Keto is a life changer that’s what I mean.

So what is keto?

It is a high fat, medium protein, low carb diet/lifestyle.

Yes, High Fat. No worries, we’ll get to that part.

So I know I said whole 30 was amazing but NO NO NO… THIS ISH RIGHT HERE…is AMAZING. I feel so much better overall. I can tell my inflammation has decreased, my energy has increased, and my mind is clear. It’s actually similar to WHOLE 30 due to some of the same restrictions but there is way more flexibility, plus you can eat cheese. You do need to be mindful of HOW MUCH you consume though. That does matter, you don’t get a pass. Yes, you can eat things such as bacon, cheese, all satisfying fatty foods but I make sure to incorporate a low carb vegetable with EVERY meal and drink 136oz of water a day. I’m actually thinking of cutting out bacon entirely, I don’t eat it much, but I think I’d be better off without.

The main things you CAN NOT consume are grains, sugar, most dairy, legumes, starch, and high carb fruit. For a full break down of things you can and can not eat click here.

I miss fruit and potatoes so bad, but I don’t want to be kicked out of ketosis.

Now I’m sure you’re wondering, what’s Ketosis?

According to KetoDash.com,

Ketosis

When you deprive your body of carbohydrates, which are the primary fuel source for people, you’re also depriving your body of its ability to keep glycogen stores filled up.

When this happens, it needs to find another fuel source, so your body starts to transition to a metabolic state known as ketosis. When your body is in ketosis, it begins to convert fat into ketones which become your body’s new fuel source. (That’s why it’s high fat.)

But what are ketones?

Ketones, also known as “ketone bodies,” are byproducts of the body breaking down fat for energy. It’s that simple.

There are 3 types of ketones:

  1. Acetoacetate: this is created by the breakdown of fatty acids and is either converted into BHB or acetone.
  2. Beta-Hydroxybutyric Acid (BGB): formed from acetoacetate and is technically not a ketone but for the sake of the ketogenic diet we consider it one.
  3. Acetone: this is created from acetoacetate, and it breaks down quickly. If you’re wondering why you get bad breath at the beginning of keto, it’s because this ketone is expelled through your breath and waste.

Why Does Our Body Need Ketones?

We are spoiled in a time where a lot of us have access to food whenever we want. A good number of people, unfortunately, don’t have that luxury today and even more didn’t have it in the past.

The reason why the human body can survive weeks without food is because it was made to use up the available resources it contains and for most people the abundant supply is fat.

When you go a couple of days without eating, your glycogen stores are quickly used up, and instead of your body going comatose it shifts gears so it can use a different energy source which is ketones.

In closing, Keto has been good to me so far. I’m going on my third week tomorrow. As I stated before, I have so much more energy, and I’ve already lost about 7 lbs. I’m not measuring or really focusing on the scale as much because in the past that’s caused me to become discouraged. I wouldn’t see the number move and would want to just drop everything, but THIS time I’m dedicated because I worked really hard to get into ketosis and I refuse to mess it up for a french fry. This lifestyle will have its critics, pros, and cons but it provides me with something I can be held accountable for so I only see good things coming from it, and it’s working FOR ME, and that’s all that matters.
